Case Study Definitions

These situations are normally challenging episodes in a companys development which business executives have faced, and which have subsequently been written up as cases Sawyer 1989

A case is a record of a business issue which has been faced by business executives, together with facts, opinions and prejudices upon which the executives had to depend. The cases are written in such a way that the reader can visualize the position of some person or group in the situation. Thus the student can actively participate in the original experience and can attempt to resolve from that point of view. Piotrowski 1982

Example Methodology When Using Case Studies

Read the documentation and make a preliminary analysis of the problem and possible solutions. This is likely to be individual work. Student will need to develop their analytical skills since they may not be reading for information but rather the ability to ask the right questions or to challenge what is written.

Informal small group work, refining and developing each individuals ideas. Active participation from everyone is needed here.

Whole class discussion.

Review of the process. Perhaps learning what is the right answer.
